چکیده

We investigate the relation between the phase-space structures of Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian deterministic thermostats. We show that phase-space structures governing reaction dynamics in Hamiltonian systems map to the same type of phase-space structures for the non-Hamiltonian isokinetic equations of motion for the thermostatted Hamiltonian. Our results establish a framework for analyzing thermostat dynamics using concepts and methods developed in reaction rate theory. PACS numbers: 45.05.+x, 45.20.−d, 82.20.Db

Advantages of a deterministic thermostat utilizing the entire phase space over other thermostatting techniques

In this work, we highlight the relative advantages of using a deterministic thermostat that utilizes the entire phasespace (PB) over other thermostats that use either the configurational (BT) or the kinetic (NH) space for temperature control. The efficacy of PB thermostat is demonstrated using a simple model of thermal conduction comprising of Lennard-Jones particles. Out of the three thermosta...

New observations regarding deterministic, time-reversible thermostats and Gauss's principle of least constraint.

Deterministic thermostats are frequently employed in nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations in order to remove the heat produced irreversibly over the course of such simulations. The simplest thermostat is the Gaussian thermostat, which satisfies Gauss's principle of least constraint and fixes the peculiar kinetic energy. There are of course infinitely many ways to thermostat systems, e....

A deterministic thermostat for controlling temperature using all degrees of freedom.

We propose a new thermostat that uses all the phase space variables for controlling temperature and thus differs from the existing thermostats that control either the kinetic (e.g., Nose Hoover) or the configurational (e.g., Braga Travis) degrees of freedom. Our thermostat is a special case of the set of equations proposed by Kusnezov et al. [Ann. Phys. 204, 155 (1990)] and is derived using the...

Thermostats for “slow” configurational modes

Thermostats are dynamical equations used to model thermodynamic variables such as temperature and pressure in molecular simulations. For computationally intensive problems such as the simulation of biomolecules, we propose to average over fast momentum degrees of freedom and construct thermostat equations in configuration space. The equations of motion are deterministic analogues of the Smoluch...

Thermostats, chaos and Onsager reciprocity

Finite thermostats are studied in the context of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. Entropy production rate has been identified with the mechanical quantity expressed by the phase space contraction rate and the currents have been linked to its derivatives with respect to the parameters measuring the forcing intensities. In some instances GreenKubo formulae, hence Onsager reciprocity, have be...
